Summary:

Cadis Etrama Di Raizel, Rai, while seeking to familiarize himself with this era, somehow locates a loyal servant of his, Frankenstein, who is currently the principal of a South Korean high school. Rai decides that this high school would be the perfect place to help him learn about the new world. He enrolls, and suddenly becomes the friend of Shinwoo, an immature teenager who is also a master martial artist. But this new world is no safer than the old, and the dignified, bewildered, technologically illiterate Rai finds himself caught up in adventures both ridiculous and dangerous.

Shiki Part II: Revenge of the Humans. If you wanted to be descriptive, that's what you'd call Shiki's second half. The Shiki were the monsters in the show's first half; the humans are the monsters in its second. It's a clever—if not exactly original—little role reversal that allows the series to transform itself from deeply creepy to genuinely horrifying, and not inconsequentially, to end with an apocalyptic climax worthy of its slow, slow boil.
The boil continues well into the second half. The population of Sotoba Village continues to be whittled down as the feeding Shiki edge ever closer to the main handful of townspeople. The undead grow bolder and the scope of their plan emerges little by little. The stupidity, stubbornness and selfishness of the locals gets ever more damaging and downright suicidal. By the time Megumi is tormenting poor, plain Kaori (by killing her family off one at a time) and the last of the truly likeable villagers has become vampire chow, the pressure is unbearable. Something has to happen. The townspeople have to stand up. Megumi, Tatsumi and their cheerfully sadistic ilk must die...or at the very least suffer mightily. And that's exactly what happens. But there's nothing satisfying about it.

You can think of Air Master as a huge anime blender filled with whacked humor and action, set to liquefy. It looks and feels like chaos, and entertains like the love child of Mohammed Ali and Jerry Lewis. Renge, strange little creature that she is, often rubs raw nerves, and the emotions are blown so far over the top that they can easily trigger the snark alarms in viewers’ heads, but by god knows what alchemy, in context it all dovetails nicely. The bad, the good, the overblown. The stupid and the even stupider, the goofy and the merciless, the lazy and the virtuosic. So nicely, in fact, that it’s a bit of a shock to see it completely self-destruct in the final two episodes. But by then the damage is done. This volume also reiterates a couple of the ongoing problems with the series. While Alita is still undeniably the central character, her actual presence has waned. Volume 6, which covered Phases 32-37, was the last volume in which Alita was at the forefront of events in every chapter. She has only been at the forefront of events in 18 of the 50 chapters since then and present in a lesser capacity in a handful of others. In other words, despite being the star, she has been completely absent in over half of the chapters spanning the last eight volumes. Granted, many of the events that have happened in her absence have been entertaining, but is this now less Alita's story specifically than the story of the setting in general. Kishiro increasingly seems to not know what he wants to do with his main character, and that's a bad long-term sign. He also seems to be finding his supporting cast more interesting right now than his lead, and in truth the supporting characters have been carrying the series lately – something which did not happen earlier in this series or its predecessor.

Otherwise Kishiro's writing and artistry are up to their usual standards. His inventiveness in cyborg design and extrapolation of combat techniques continues to be unequalled amongst manga-ka, as is his penchant for throwing in obscure little factual tidbits. His tendency for the occasional chibi aside also remains; his current theme is to portray Alita in a catlike form in such situations. His artistry, especially in action scenes, is as clean and clearly-defined as ever, though this volume lacks the biological monstrosities frequently seen lately (which is not necessarily a negative).

Viz Media does its usual fine job on the translation and production end, including nicely-detailed color cover art and a complete translation of all sound effects. As per the norm, the volume opens with a story summary and very brief character blurbs and closes with three pages of “NG Theater” four-panel gag strips. The price has remained at $9.99 for a full 200 pages of actual content, making it a relatively economical title by current standards. On a sad note, there is no indication present on when we might see the next volume.

While this volume may not show the franchise at its very best, it is an improvement over recent volumes and fulfills its purpose very well. The franchise's storytelling well-being may yet endure.
